Writing Content: Do You Have What It Takes?

When writing content, there are various things that should be taken into consideration. Although content creation should be similar across the board ina general sense, there are several avenues to consider that can take you in new directions for teh type of content you are creating. Differences arise if you are writing your own articles vs. writing for someone else, varying audiences that are ideal, and of course the topic being discussed. While understandingt hose differences is crucial for the best content, the ABC's of content creation can be broken down in a few simple steps. Here are a few things to take into consideration when creating content:

  1. Time – how long should you spend brainstorming, writing, editing? Some people spend hours while others spend days. The answer is this, if you have nothing important to say, then don’t say it at all. This eliminates a lot of time spent. We also live in an era where new content is published every millisecond, so think about how much of the same information is already out there. What is your angle, how are you providing somethign different? Consider this and lessen your time spent writing content.
  2. Space – how much space do you have? Are you writing for a magazine, or are you writing a blog post? Consider what the audience wants. If you are discussing something that requires details, explanations, and hard hitting evidence, then it is best not to leave anything out. However, if you are writing a general blog post, consider using images and less wording. Keep it short, sweet, and to the point. (Infographics anyone?)
  3. Attention – think about how to capture people’s attention. For emails and even blog/article topics, think about an interesting, eye grabbing title. Give your audience a reason to dig deeper. Again, images and video can be major assets here.
  4. Interaction – think about how interactive your story is. Maybe include a call to action, provide links to surveys, or further information that will attract more readership. Having something for your readers to think about, in addition to just the story they’re reading, gives your audience something to enjoy.
  5. Fact Check – always fact check. Be sure that your facts are accurate and thorough. You want to make sure that if anyone were to question your sources and facts, they won’t find any evidence to prove you are completely wrong. Sure, there will always be someone to question everything you say, but generally accepted facts are a pretty good place to start.
