Hi guys, Laurel Mintz here with Elevate My Brand. We’re bringing you a series on how to create kick ass company culture and one of the important things for me is really differentiating between being a boss and being a leader. I find that being a boss has a bit of a negative mentality or a negative connotation where as being a leader really about leading by example, building respect with your team and making sure they feel that there is always an open door policy where they feel they can come talk to me about questions, concerns, issues, that they really feel like this company is just as much theirs as it is mine.
I think that there’s a term and its call servant-leadership model and that’s really about making sure that you feel as a leader that you’re serving your team, just as much as they are serving you. At the end of the day we know that it’s so important that your team respect you, that you respect your team and only in developing those kinds of partnerships with your team, within the context of your company can you really be the best leader possible. I’ll tell you I get better results from my team, we get better results for our clients, when everyone feels like they are on the same page, fighting the same fight, in the same direction. It’s important to me that my team look at me like a leader not a boss and in fact when people actually introduce me as a boss. I’m like no-no, this is my team, we are a group, this is everyone working towards the same end goal. So that in my opinion is the difference between being a boss and being a leader.
